About Me

Installing a New Roof

Hello, my name is Liam. I live in a rural community which is located about 200km away from Alice Springs, Australia. Life in the Outback can be hard, so the entire community needs to look after itself. Since I moved out here from the big city, I have learnt lots of cool skills that I didn't know before. One of these skills is roofing. When my neighbour's roof began to leak, he called me over and we worked together to install a new one. He taught me lots of cool tips and tricks which I have written about below. Enjoy!

2 Critical Considerations to Ensure You Choose the Best Roofing Tiles

Sometimes you call in a professional roofer to conduct repairs on your residential roof and they end up telling you that what you need is a roof replacement and not roof repairs. This may leave you wondering about what type of roofing products you should choose for your roofing project.

One of the most popular roofing styles on the Australian construction market right now is roof tiling. Roof tiles are available in a broad selection of materials, profiles, colours and finishes so that homeowners and other building owners can easily find something that matches their exact structure requirements. For that reason, it is imperative for you to be familiar with the selection process so you can choose a product that's suitable for your home and family.

Here is a selection guide you can follow to ensure you purchase the right roofing tiles for your roof replacement

How long the tiles can last

Because not all roofing tiles are made of the same material, or using the same manufacturing technologies, they do not have the same service life. When you are choosing tiles for your new roofing, you should ponder over the longevity of each product. Generally speaking, most roofing tiles are designed to provide years and years of service, but not all tiles offer the same level of resistance to the elements.

If you live in a region that is prone to hail storms, for example, metal tiles can be an ideal choice for your roof because it offers superior impact resistance compared to alternatives, such as wood tiles and concrete tiles.

The level of maintenance required

This is another important factor worthy of consideration when you are selecting roofing tiles. In order to get life-long service from the particular type of roofing tiles that you intend to use, you should be able to meet its maintenance requirements. Generally speaking, all roofing tiles require a basic level of maintenance, but some tiles require a higher level of upkeep than others to remain in good shape.

Compare concrete tiles and metal tiles, for example. Concrete tiles get eroded over time due to the damaging effects of the elements, such as rain, strong winds and hail stones, and will need to be frequently inspected for cracking, disintegration and erosion. Metal tiles, on the other hand, do not crack, disintegrate or erode like concrete tiles and may therefore only need basic cleaning and periodic repainting to ensure maximum lifespan.

With these critical tips, you will increase your chances of selecting the right tiles for your roof replacement.
