About Me

Installing a New Roof

Hello, my name is Liam. I live in a rural community which is located about 200km away from Alice Springs, Australia. Life in the Outback can be hard, so the entire community needs to look after itself. Since I moved out here from the big city, I have learnt lots of cool skills that I didn't know before. One of these skills is roofing. When my neighbour's roof began to leak, he called me over and we worked together to install a new one. He taught me lots of cool tips and tricks which I have written about below. Enjoy!

Should You Invest in Cedar Shakes for Your New Roof?

When you commission roofing installation services, there are several decisions that you need to make. Not only do you and your contractors need to decide on the best design for the new roof, but you also have to determine which roofing materials will be best suited for your long-term needs. For some homeowners, metal roofing supplies tend to be at the top of their list since they assume that their timber counterparts are nowhere near as durable, but this is incorrect. Admittedly, while some timber species will not be capable of withstanding Australia's demanding climate, this is not the case with cedar wood shakes. This timber species offers an array of benefits that will automatically boost the value of your new property. Check out the following reasons why you should invest in cedar shakes for your new roof.

Cedar shakes add visual interest to your house

A misconception you may make about timber species is that if you have seen one type of wood, then you have seen the rest, but this is grossly untrue. The thing to note about cedar shakes is that they offer a variety of hues that will add a rich vibrancy to your roofing without you having to invest in expensive stains to change its inherent colour. Depending on the species, you can find cedar shakes in dynamic reds, ambers, browns and even gold hues! Thus, you can rest assured that your roofing will stand out, more so when placed among a sea of metal roofs. Additionally, you have the flexibility to change the texture of the cedar shakes, and this will enhance their aesthetic value. Lastly, since this is a natural roofing material, you can rest assured that your home will blend in seamlessly with nature, making it look like part and parcel of the environment.

Cedar shakes are easy to work with

The second major benefit of cedar shakes that you will be hard-pressed to come across with roofing supplies such as natural stone is their effortless workability. When the cedar is cut for roofing applications, it is done in lengthwise strips that maintain a straight grain. Hence, each length of wood will have a uniform texture that is not only easy to saw into smaller pieces but easy to nail too. Furthermore, the hip and ridge parts of the roofing are assembled offsite. Therefore, once the cedar shakes are delivered, these parts are ready for installation. The easier your new roofing is to bring set up, the less time and labour spent on this project Hence, when you opt for cedar shakes, you can expect this project to be affordable.

Additional reasons why you should invest in cedar shakes for your new roofing is the enhanced insulation that this material offers as well as the superior durability that it provides.
